Dr Jim Marshall OBE (1923 – 5 Apr 2012)

Written by admin on April 6, 2012 – 7:27 am -

RIP The Father of Loud / The Lord of Loud, one of the 4 forefathers of rock music equipment. Marshall amps has been used by the biggest names in rock, including Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Eddie Van Halen and Guns N Roses, and has reached iconic status.

2 rock stars died on the same date: Kurt Cobain on 5th April 1994 and Layne Staley on 5th April 2002.

Some selected tweets:

@DaveMustaine I’ve never been sadder than today. My dear friend & father figure Jim Marshall passed away. I am at a loss for words.

@Scott_Ian Just heard abt Jim Marshall passing, am lucky 2 hv spent time w/the man that created the sound of Rock music. true LEGEND

An indication of the iconic status of Marshall amps in rock is highlighted in the famous scene from that perennial cult favourite mockumentary, This Is Spinal Tap (1984) called “Marshall Amp goes to 11“.

Seems that Peavy is further down the list, biggest name guitarist associated with it is probably EVH.
