One of rock’s greatest ever songs, off their legendary LP “Machine Head” (1971). There’s a long, classical-style guitar and organ solo. It’s probably the world’s first speed metal song.

The was Deep Purple’s first song in a concert performance for many years, while nowadays it appears as an encore.

Original lineup. Now how many times can you hear Ian Gillan say about Highway Star: “this is off our new album”?

This video was taken from the European tour which happened a few months before the Japanese tour. Filmed in Copenhagen, Denmark in March 1972. Ian wanted to quit the band in August just before the Japan tour started, but was persuaded to stay for that tour and the US tour the next year.

This was the last song on Whitesnake’s 1997 live unplugged album entitled “Starkers in Tokyo”. The whole album features David Coverdale on vocals and Adrian Vandenberg on acoustic guitar. The performance was recorded at the EMI studios in Japan for a small audience of fans.

Soldier of Fortune is perhaps the best known song off Deep Purple’s 9th studio album, Stormbringer, released Dec 1974. The album marked a major shift in musical direction, where soul and funk elements became prominent. This displeased some fans and Blackmore himself, who left soon after the album release.

Written by David Coverdale and Ritchie Blackmore.
